Team Rocinante (Ed Luck & Corey Bothamley) are stoked to announce that we're taking part in Shitbox Rally 2021 Spring!! This year, all the teams are driving their shitboxes from Mackay to Darwin in Australia, a distance of over 3,600km over some of the roughest roads Australia has to throw at us - and believe us when we say that means quite a bit!
The Shitbox Rally requires teams to drive a road worthy car worth less than $1,000 (and in Australia that's no mean feat because our road worthiness rules are pretty intense), hence the very apt name for the rally.
Shitbox Rally is the largest community lead fundraiser for the Cancer Council in Australia and is now in its 11th year. Part of the participation is that all teams have to raise a minimum of $5,000 but most teams raise well above this amount. We want to do our part as fans of a Sci-Fi community that has already shown to be able to come together and make amazing things happen, and show that our community of Expanse fans can do the same for cancer research!
Cancer is a disease without borders, and so whilst your donation is going to Australia, remember that as a disease without borders, the research is also without borders and the money we raise may help in finding a cure. Not only for those we have already lost but for those at risk in future.
So whether you are Earther, Martian, or Beltalowda, the research into a cure for cancer helps us all.
To honour those already lost and to help those not yet touched by cancer please consider donating to help with cancer research, even if it's only a few dollars you can spare. In turn, myself and Corey will fly The Expanse flag high.
Shitbox Rally is the adventure of a lifetime challenging participants and their cars, worth no more than $1,000, on a 7 day drive across Australia to raise money for cancer research.
The rally is not a race – it’s a fun, colourful, unpredictable adventure with participants travelling at their own pace in smaller groups. Vehicles often break down but “we never leave anyone behind” and each night is spent camping beneath the stars and celebrating the day’s achievements. It all adds up to an incredible opportunity to see Australia’s vast and beautiful countryside and make lifelong friends, many brought together after experiencing cancer themselves or seeing cancer impact family and friends.
Since it’s inception the rally has been the largest fundraiser for the Cancer Council nationally.
Shitbox Rally is a dedicated fundraising event for cancer research with funds going to Cancer Council.
Cancer Council is one of the largest non-government funders of cancer research in Australia. We conduct and fund research studies across all cancers and all stages of the cancer journey.
Thanks to the community funds raised such as Shitbox Rally we can fund world-class research that reduces the impact of cancer for everyone.
Over $26 million has been raised by Box Rallies to date, supporting ground-breaking projects such as:
These projects wouldn’t be possible without your support.
